Specialty Crops

Overview

Specialty crops are gaining attention across the agricultural spectrum with the increased number of provisions addressing specialty crop issues in the Food Conservation and Energy Act (2008 Farm Bill). The statutory definition of the term is wide-ranging, including fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits and vegetables, horticulture, and nursery crops. In practice, however, the term "specialty crops" is generally used to describe all crops except those commodities that receive direct income support under Title I of the 2008 Farm Bill.
